Michitaro Sindo letters, 1901-1902.

This collection contains three letters from Sindo to Cone. The letter of June 20, 1901, discusses his ichthyological work in Hawaii with Dr. Jordan and the Hawaiian countryside. The letter of Nov. 24, 1901, written at Stanford, concerns his academic work and his assessment of Japanese home and social life (in reaction to an article in OUTLOOK). The letter of July 31, 1902, written from Pago Pago, Samoa, discusses his ichthyological work there with Jordan and Dr. Kellogg, and his description of Samoa and its people, including his visit to Robert Louis Stevenson's residence and grave.

Robert Lewis (later changed to "Louis") Balfour Stevenson was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on November 13, 1850. Michitaro Sindo, a Japanese student at Stanford from 1900 to 1906, worked with David Starr Jordan on ichthyological studies and the Commission to study Hawaiian fishes.
